Heartstrings Community Foundation, a nonprofit that provides unique employment opportunities for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities, celebrated its 20th year of service on December 1, 2021.
“Just one week after its inception, on September 4th, 2001, we sat wondering if the world was going to end.” Bunny Higgins, Executive Director explained, “We started questioning if we were crazy for doing this. Starting a new non-profit would require donations that wouldn’t come easily with the uncertainty brought on by our country being attacked. Ultimately, we knew the need was clear so we went to work.”
Despite the 2008 stock market crash and recent 2020 COVID outbreak, Heartstrings has remained resilient and creative by adding new businesses like Heartfully Made, where employees sell handcrafted items at Sacks on Santa Fe in Downtown Overland Park.
We attribute the last 20 years of success to our dedicated staff, faithful donors, friends, and family that continue to champion Heartstrings’ mission,” added Anne Hull, Founder.
