About Heartstrings
Our Story, Mission and Impact
A Mission Rooted in Personal Experience
Heartstrings was founded in 1999 by Anne Hull, a mother and special education teacher who recognized a critical gap in adult services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). When her own children approached adulthood, the options available were either sheltered workshops or unsupported, independent employment.
Anne’s background gave her the tools to dream of something better. After traveling and researching programs across the country, she realized that the key piece missing was
community interaction. True growth and success, she found, happen not in isolation but through inclusive, hands-on experiences within the community.
Heartstrings was built on this belief and has since grown into a mission-driven nonprofit offering unique, meaningful employment opportunities for adults with I/DD. Today, our team proudly continues this legacy—shaping futures, building confidence, and fostering independence.
“Keeping vulnerable people behind walls doesn’t protect them—it limits them. What
works is community, purpose, and connection.”
A Personal Leap Becomes a Lifelong Commitment
Bunny Higgins, now Executive Director, joined Heartstrings in 2001—initially for a three-month consulting role. But that short-term plan quickly turned into a life-changing commitment.
By December 1, 2001, Heartstrings welcomed its first group of participants. Bunny stayed. She helped build an organization grounded in resilience and creativity—one that continues to grow stronger year after year.
“One week after I started, 9/11 happened. We sat stunned, watching the towers fall. Then we looked at each other and said, ‘Well, we better get to work.’ Anne made coffee—and we never looked back.”
